Today in the Theatre at 2pm SLT, in the first of our program of Talks and Discussions, we are offering a chance for creators to bring in some of their latest (or most loved) creations, and show them off to fellow creators and Expo visitors.
These Show and Tell sessions are always fun – and a way of showcasing some remarkable creations!
Each contestant can decorate in any style they wish that suits their house, but they MUST include at least three items purchased from RFL vendors at the Home and Garden Expo.
To enter, click on the sign boards set out along the street of competition houses on Hope 3 which will give you the rules AND a competition entry form. Fill that in and post it in one of the blue mailboxes on the street (next to the sign) by the end of Friday, March 5th OR fill in the form on the web: https://forms.gle/tunqsajM9QXsQRwb6
Timetable:
February 28th – March 5th – people apply for the competition, stating which house they would like to decorate.
March 6th – 12th – the competitors decorate their houses and gardens
March 13th – 17th – visitors to the Expo can vote on which house and garden they like best.
People will vote by donating to a kiosk set outside each of the houses. Each Linden donated to Relay for Life in these kiosks will count as a vote.
Competitors can work alone or in pairs or in a small team.
Last year our Home and Garden Decorating Competition had sixteen houses – and we were blown away by the standard of work you all produced!
Not only that – the competition also raised the amazing sum of 159,288 Lindens – that’s US$615.93 in total!
So this year it is back, with a very sneaky twist. This year we are cutting the number of prims/li you have to build with!
The houses are fourteen different builds, including two of seven different styles, including beach houses, tiny homes and one with a distinctively Mexican feel – the new Casa Blanca from Danny Bourne. Full details will appear in the blog and on the Home Decorating page shortly and you will, of course, be able to explore the full range at the Expo!
These homes and gardens will be decorated by fourteen finalists who will have 350 prims (land impact) to decorate the Home and the surrounding Garden area.
The finalists will be chosen by a raffle draw made by Saffia Widdershins, who will draw the names out of the equivalent of a Second Life hat (a random name generator script).
The finalists will be each assigned one of the fourteen houses, based on their preferences. Competitors can work alone or in pairs or in a small team.
Each contestant (or team) can decorate in any style they wish that suits their house, but they MUST include AT LEAST THREE items purchased from RFL vendors at the Home and Garden Expo.
People will vote for the final winner by donating to a kiosk set outside each of the houses. Each Linden donated to Relay for Life in these kiosks will count as a vote.
Timeline
1. Entries to be submitted by the end of March 5th
2. Decorating to take place between noon on March 6th – the end of March 12th.
3. Voting will run from March 13th – the end of March 17th. Votes will be placed by adding Lindens into the kiosk in front of each house.
4. The result will be announced on March 18th.
In the meantime, why not take a look at what the decorators accomplished last time?
Prim Perfect and Designing Worlds have run talks at the Home and Garden Expo since (gulp) 2011 … and we’d like to invite YOU to be a part of this year’s series of talks with designers, landscapers and creatives within the Home and Garden market.
We’re planning to host events at 2pm (and, if needed, 5pm) every day. If you would really LOVE to give a presentation, but can’t make that time, contact us and we will see if we can fit you in.
We are happy to host talks, presentations, interviews, question and answer sessions and show and tell events. It’s an opportunity for designers to share ideas, for people to meet their favourite creators, for communities to come together and talk about their culture and ideas. We’re very open to hosting what YOU want to tell us about!
We are also planning to have some of our popular “Show and Tell” events and hopefully some panel discussions on Second Life.
If you would like to be a part of our programme at the Expo, please complete the form below with your topic and preferred dates and times. We will try to fit in as many people as we can!
Well, it will be time at 4pm SLT today, Sunday 22nd March.
Throughout the weeks of the Home and Garden Expo, we have had calm, peaceful times at 4pm each day when the lanterns are released. It provided a space for meditation and reflection. We thought of those who have gone before us in the fight against cancer, and also those who are fighting cancer, or supporting others through it.
Today, as the Expo comes to an end, we will celebrate this event with one last explosion of joy and thanksgiving for all those we love and have loved, all those who have stood together with us on the fight.
Tonight, with special music supplied by DaveOSaurus, we will watch those lanterns rise … and some us will RIDE them into the night sky.
And then we will come down into the gardens at the Designing Worlds cafe and dance until 6pm!
We’ll also be announcing the result of the Home and Garden Expo Decoration Story competition – so don’t miss it!
1st Place: Jarrod Beck for House 8: Lil Victorian by Painted Pixels
2nd Place: Ororeia Resident & Kyra Nachtigal for House 4: The Skwer by Cain Maven
3rd Place: House 5: Aja Direwytch for Barn House by RVi Design
In addition …
We invited the competitors to submit stories to go with their homes, if they wanted to, and several did. You can read these stories by clicking on the signs by the gates of each house. We were so impressed by the stories that we decided to run a second competition for the best three stories.
These will be judged and the results announced at the Final Lantern Ceremony at 4pmSLT on the roof of the theatre on Hope 3 – when we all ride the Lanterns (more details about that to come).
And that will be followed by a party in the gardens of the Designing Worlds cafe at the Expo (designed by undercoverlady), dj’d by DaveOSaurus.
The Home and Garden Decorating Competition is now finished!
The winners will be announced at 2pm SLT today at the Decorating Street – which will give people a chance to inspect all the houses (and maybe donate a little more to Relay for Life of Second Life!
And to whet your appetite for the announcement of the results … here are the fantastic prizes that stores have generously donated!

The Home and Garden Expo has been extended! The last full day will be March 22nd, so you all have time to look around and enjoy all the fabulous displays!
We’ve also extended voting in the Home and Garden Decorating contest. Voting will now close at midnight on Friday 20th March, and there will bea special party in the Designing Worlds cafe on Expo 3 with live singers where the results will be announced on Saturday 21st.
So why not come over and register your vote for your favourite home?
And to help you choose, later today we’ll be posting more details of the homes and the stories behind them!
We explore our beautiful Designing Worlds cafe at the Expo, created by undercoverlady.
We talk to Kaerri, the main organiser of the Expo, about the work that goes into the event, and Maxwell Graf, an old friend who’s recently returned to Second Life with a stunning new build.
And we take a ride on the monorail to explore a special selection of Linden Homes. All this, and more – including a selection of Expo photos from the wonderful Wildstar Beaumont.
Today, Saturday 7th March, in the Theatre at 2pm SLT, SkyeRyder Varriale, of Varriale Designs, will be talking about her beautiful homes – and about the landscaping that forms such an important part of the concepts she explores.
And Skye will be offering a giftcard worth 7,000 Lindens to be spent at her store for one lucky winner of our prize draw (open to all attendees)!
All the fourteen houses have been decorated, and RFL kiosks have been placed outside each home.
Every Linden you pay into the kiosks counts as a vote – you can vote as much and as often as you like, and you can vote for as many houses as you want!
Voting will close at midnight SLT on March 12th.
For information on the individual houses, click on the house name signs outside each home on Hope 3. You’ll find stories, links to pictures and blog posts!
More information about the individual houses will be posted here soon.
